"Without Knowing It,
I Ran to Him"

He came to America to escape his father.
Then, 14 years later, he saw his father at a bus stop —

Seattle, Washington · Korea
Act 1 — Bus Stop · Korea · Spring 2013

The car stopped briefly. Through the window, he saw a bus stop.

There stood an elderly man in a neat suit. His father.

His father had come out to welcome his son arriving from America. They were in the middle of the road. Not a place to stop. And yet — without knowing it, the door opened. Without knowing it, he stepped out. Without knowing it, he ran.

"With a bright smile — 'Sung-su~! I knew you were coming, so I waited here.'"

— Rev. K., "I Miss My Father," Nov. 22, 2013

"Is this really my father?" He swallowed the wave of emotion that rose in him.
Act 2 — Sadang-dong, Seoul · 1970s

This son was born into a pastor's family. Second of four brothers. His father was a church planter.

In elementary school, he helped his father pull a cart loaded with bricks. Father pulling in front, son pushing behind. With tiny hands. He could barely keep up. Then his father turned and said:

"Because Sung-su is pushing from behind, the cart just rolls on its own~!"

— Rev. K., "I Miss My Father," Nov. 22, 2013

It was the son's first participation in building a church.

Act 3 — Senior Year · Then America

The year he reached his senior year of high school, his father left again to plant a new church. It was the most important period of his son's life. Father was not there.

"How could a pastor who preaches God's word abandon his child during the most critical time of his life?"

His trust in his father collapsed, and his faith shook. After six months of spiritual wandering, he found God on his own — and became a pastor. As his father had wanted.

And then he came to America.

"Shamefully, one of the main reasons I came to America in my younger years was to get far away from my father."

Act 4 — Lynnwood · 14 Years

The man who came to America to escape his father planted a church in Lynnwood. In an unfamiliar land where no one welcomed him. Starting with an apartment living room as a sanctuary.

Fourteen years passed. And he wrote a confession.

"For the past 14 years, I think I've only looked forward. Years buried in work without any real hobbies or rest. I felt deep guilt that I'd caused people I love unintended pain and disappointment... Wounds from growing up as a pastor's son, not by my own choice, had never healed."

— Rev. K., "A Letter to Our Spiritual Family," Jun. 19, 2016

The son who had fled his father realized, after 14 years of ministry: the wounds he had received from his father were being passed on to the very people he loved most.

"My heart ached. Tears came."
Act 5 — After · The Baton

The day he ran to his father at the bus stop was the last time. A few days later, his father passed away.

The son wrote his father a letter.

"Father — you have completed your race and your calling. Rest now in Jesus' arms in heaven. I will take up that baton and run."

The son who fled his father
built a church in that unfamiliar land.

From the experience of arriving where no one welcomed him,
he built a community that welcomes every stranger.

Running with his father's baton —
HebronGuide was born.

To say to every immigrant stepping out of the airport:
"I was waiting for you."

Did you wonder — why did he wear a suit to a bus stop?
Because someone important was coming.
His son. His precious son was coming.

Thank you, Father.
For waiting. For wearing a suit to a bus stop.
For standing there, hoping your son would run to you.

That waiting became a baton.

HebronGuide waits too.
At airport doors. Restaurant entrances. Church parking lots.
No suit — but with the heart.

Be that person.
