inside the church doors.
It must begin in the heart of the world.

활주로에 착륙하는 비행기. 터미널 문이 열리며 김지수 씨가 캐리어를 끌고 나온다.
멈춰 서서 주변을 둘러본다. 아는 얼굴이 하나도 없다.

A plane lands on the runway. The terminal doors open and Jisu Kim wheels out her suitcase.
She stops and looks around. Not a single familiar face.

사람들이 서로를 반기며 포옹하고, 이름을 부르며 지나쳐 간다.
김지수 씨만 혼자 서 있다.

People embrace each other, call out names, and pass by.
Jisu Kim stands alone.

"... 내가 지금 뭘 하러 온 거지."

"... What am I even doing here."

표지판 글씨가 눈에 들어오지 않는다. 영어도, 거리도, 냄새도 — 모든 것이 낯설다.
캐리어 손잡이를 꽉 쥔다.

The signs don't register. The English, the distance, the smell — everything is foreign.
She grips the suitcase handle tight.

좁은 방. 캐리어를 내려놓는다. 침대 위에 걸터앉는다.
창밖으로 낯선 거리가 보인다. 아무것도 보이지 않는다.

A small room. She sets down her luggage. Sits on the edge of the bed.
Through the window, an unfamiliar street. She sees nothing.

"전화할 사람도 없고... 어디서부터 시작해야 하지.
아무것도 모르겠어. 정말 아무것도."

"There's no one to call... Where do I even begin.
I don't know anything. I really don't know anything."

한참을 그렇게 앉아 있다가 — 배가 고프다는 걸 깨닫는다.
언제 마지막으로 뭔가를 먹었는지도 기억이 없다.
스마트폰을 꺼낸다.

She sits there for a long time — then realizes she's hungry.
She can't even remember the last time she ate.
She takes out her phone.

검색창에 손가락으로 입력한다. '한인 식당'.
지도 위에 핀이 하나 꽂힌다. 걸어서 5분.

She types with her finger. 'Korean restaurant.'
A pin drops on the map. 5 minutes on foot.

김지수 씨, 외투를 걸치고 문을 나선다.

Jisu Kim puts on her coat and steps out the door.

작은 한식당 유리문 너머로 따뜻한 불빛이 보인다.
김지수 씨, 잠시 멈추었다가 문을 민다.

Through the glass door of a small Korean restaurant, warm light glows.
Jisu Kim pauses for a moment, then pushes open the door.

문이 열리며 된장찌개 냄새가 훅 밀려온다.
카운터 너머 박 집사님, 환하게 웃으며 고개를 든다.

The door opens and the warm smell of doenjang jjigae rushes in.
Deacon Park behind the counter looks up with a bright smile.

"어서 오세요~ 혼자 오셨어요? 처음이신 것 같은데?"

"Welcome~ Are you alone? Looks like your first time here?"

김지수 씨, 잠시 멈추더니 조용히 대답한다.

Jisu Kim pauses for a moment, then answers quietly.

"네... 오늘 도착했어요."

"Yes... I arrived today."

잠시 주변을 둘러보다가 조심스럽게 말을 잇는다.

She glances around for a moment, then adds hesitantly.

"이곳은 처음이라 좀 막막하네요~"

"I'm new here... I'm not sure where to start~"

그 말 한마디. 김지수 씨의 눈시울이 붉어진다.
고개를 살짝 숙이며 빈 자리에 앉는다.

Those few words. Jisu Kim's eyes redden.
She looks down slightly and takes a seat.

박 집사님은 이 도시 한인교회 성도다. 그 사실을 김지수 씨는 아직 모른다.

Deacon Park is a member of the Korean church in this city. Jisu Kim doesn't know that yet.

그릇이 비워질 즈음, 박 집사님이 조용히 스마트폰을 꺼내 김지수 씨 앞에 놓는다.

As the bowls empty, Deacon Park quietly takes out a phone and places it in front of Jisu Kim.

"이 도시 처음이시면 이거 꼭 저장해 두세요.
병원, 학교, 은행... 다 나와 있어요."

"If you're new to this city, you'll want to save this.
Hospitals, schools, banks... it's all there."

계산을 마치고 나가려는 김지수 씨에게 박 집사님이 명함을 내민다.

As Jisu Kim finishes paying and heads out, Deacon Park hands her a card.

"제 개인 번호예요. 도움 필요하면 언제든 연락하세요."

"This is my personal number. Call me anytime if you need help."

김지수 씨, 두 손으로 명함을 받는다.
낯선 도시에서 받은 첫 번째 전화번호.

Jisu Kim receives the card with both hands.
The first phone number in a strange city.

김지수 씨, 침대에 앉아 스마트폰을 하나씩 넘긴다. 혼자다.
병원, 운전면허, 학교, 한인 마트, 교회...
화면 빛이 얼굴에 비친다. 천천히 입가에 미소가 번진다.

Jisu Kim sits on the bed, scrolling through her phone. Alone.
Hospital, driver's license, school, Korean grocery, church...
The screen light reflects on her face. Slowly, a smile spreads.

"낯선 도시에서 막막했는데... 이런 정착 가이드가 있었구나~!"

"I felt so lost in a strange city... and there was a settlement guide like this all along~!"

문자 알림이 뜬다.

A text notification appears.

"집사님, 덕분에 잘 정착하고 있어요. 정말 감사합니다."

"Deacon Park, thanks to you I'm settling in well. Thank you so much."

박 집사님, 미소를 지으며 답장을 입력한다.

Deacon Park smiles and types a reply.

"잘 됐네요~ 이번 주일에 교회 한번 같이 가보실래요?"

"That's great~ Would you like to come to church with me this Sunday?"
